What we did on the first nice day of the year
One of the benefits of my new job is that I can schedule my time to be available to help Kathy with some of her work.
Yesterday for the first time in many years, I helped her load a kiln.
That means taking all the work she has made at home over the past several weeks and carefully and efficiently loading it into the gas kiln at the Stoneware Studio.
She does the careful / efficient part.
My role is to help with the 'heavy lifting' of which she still does a huge amount, even with my help. Those large kiln shelves weigh 30 lbs. Just try to lift one of those above your shoulders, arms extended, and gently place it on a stack of fragile pottery, and you will get a taste of how hard the job is.
That's just one small part of the whole process, which she completes 4 or 5 times a year. Whew!

Click through to see a few of the steps involved in loading the kiln.
I hope to post pictures from the whole process, as I have the opportunity to shoot all the steps
