First attempt at home coffee roasting

One of the many things which has captivated me on 'the great time sponge' is the process of roasting your own coffee at home using easily obtainable equipment.

I'm not a huge coffee aficionado, but I really like the idea of DIY anything. Really, the process is what it is all about. And, won't the coffee just taste better, because I had more of a hand in making it? (Yes. Yes it will)

So, armed with some great instructions from Sweet Marias , and some serious affirmation from our friends MB and JK (" you will LOVE coffee that you roast yourself") , I set out to find a second hand hot air popper. I found one at MCC fairly quickly, and then after several months, finally got around to buying some green coffee beans, just today. (Picked them up from Halal, which is so close to us, it's hard to believe I didn't get them sooner.)

So now I have roasted my own beans for the first time. Here's how...

Really all you need is a hot air popcorn popper, and a few utensils you probably have.

Green beans go into the popper

Let it run for 5 minutes or so, and you have separated chaff, and beautiful dark beans

Cool and strain a little

Cool some more

And then into a jar to rest overnight before grinding (It smells sooo good)

I am looking forward to the first taste tomorrow morning. I will probably use the Bunn drip machine, but if I am feeling ambitious, I just might pull out the Aeropress, for a little more of that hands on experience.

So... How was that first cup?

Just a test
